| August 8th - Broadcasting Station CFJB Limited, owner of CHIC-AM, formerly
CFJB, opened CHIC-FM. Studios and transmitter were at 2 Ellen Street in
Brampton. The station broadcast at 102.1 MHz with 857 watts ERP.
September 21 - Leslie A. Allen agreed to purchase all the shares of
CHIC Radio Ltd. From S.W. Caldwell, Frank M. Early, F.J. Shouldice, John
Fox, W.S. Martin, Frank W. Richardson, Garth H. Ketemer, G. Clare Burt,
J.R. Jenkins and Gordon F. Keeble. The sellers agreed to the sale on October
15, and the sale was subject to Government approval.
The CRTC approved the transfer of 100% of Hemisphere Investments Ltd.
(majority shareholder in CHIC Radio Ltd.) from Leslie A. Allen to his brother,
Harry J. Allen.
July 1st - CHIC-FM became CFNY. In August, power increased to 100,000
watts from a 259 foot (78.9 metres) tower at a new site located west of
Brampton.
April 9th - All-Can Holdings (Harry & Leslie Allen), owner of CHIC
Radio Ltd., went into receivership.
November, - CFNY-FM and CHIC-AM were purchased by Mutual Broadcasting
(Civitas Corporation Ltd.).
The corporate name changed to Mutual Communications (1980) Ltd.
February - The CFNY studios and offices moved from 340 Main Street to
83 Kennedy Road South.
September 26 - Mutual sold CFNY to Selkirk Communications Ltd.
November 28 - CFNY officially began transmitting from the CN Tower.
Effective radiated power is 35,000 watts (horizontal & vertical). antenna
height is 1,400 feet.
September 28th - The CRTC approved Maclean-Hunter Ltd.'s purchase of
Selkirk Communications Ltd.
Rogers Communications Inc. purchased Maclean-Hunter Ltd. and announces
the sale of Key Radio CFNY Ltd. (CFNY) to Shaw Communications Inc.
May 1, 1996, CFNY moved its studios from Brampton to the Eaton Centre,
