In March 2008, CTV committed to carry a Canada/UK co-production of a 13-episode series to be hosted by Elvis Costello.  The series began shooting in New York, for future scheduling on CTV, Bravo!, the UK's Channel 4 and on the Sundance Channel in the U.S. 

Creator of the series and co-Executive Producer was Stephen Warden. The co-producers of the series were Elton John's Rocket Pictures, Toronto's Reinvention Entertainment, Spybox Pictures and Prospero Pictures.  Canadian David Furnish  joined Costello and John as three of the series' executive producers.

Guests participating in the early episodes of the series included Sir Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed and Bill Clinton. Musical guests scheduled to participate included Bill Charlap, Diana Krall, Rufus Wainwright, Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden. The series started on CTV on April 3rd 2009. 

On October 20th 2009,  CTV and Bravo announced their commitment to a second season of Spectacle.   The new season's line-up would include  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Bono and The Edge of U2, who recorded their session with Costello in Toronto, at the Masonic Temple.

Among the additional confirmed guests for the seven-part season were Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar winning New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen, multi-Grammy, multi-platinum artist Sheryl Crow; Grammy winners Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Levon Helm and Allen Toussaint; Neko Case, Jesse Winchester, Ray LaMontagne, Nick Lowe, Richard Thompson, and JUNO Award winning Canadian Ron Sexsmith.

On March 10th 2010, Spectacle returned for a seven-episode run.
