Manning, J. Arthur

The founder of three radio stations in the Maritimes, Art Manning got his start in radio in 1938 at CHNS Halifax.

Following service as a radar officer in WW II, he. obtained a licence to establish radio station CKCL at Truro, NS, which went on the air on September 10, 1947.

In 1957, he launched his second station CKDH at Amherst.

In 1965, he brought stereo FM to Truro with CKTO-FM.

CKCL's equipment was built almost entirely by hand by Manning and the station's first engineer, Sid Bernasconi. Always a pioneer, CKCL became the first Station in Canada to install an automated mechanical-sort traffic system, and the first in Canadian radio and TV to Install and operate a computer.

In retirement from radio, Manning founded Truro's first computer company, Amet Enterprises Ltd.

Art served as President of the Atlantic Broadcasters Association and as a Director of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. He was active in many community public service activities.

In 1995, Arthur Manning was inducted into the CAB Broadcast Hall of Fame.

Art died in 1995.
