As It Happens

In April of 2006, long-time CBC reporter and documentary filmmaker Carol Off was given the important job of host of As It Happens, considered the flagship public affairs program on CBC Radio. The program had debuted on November 18, 1968.

Mark Starowicz, currently the Executive Director of CBC’s Documentary Unit, developed it. The purpose was simple: conduct interviews by calling people on the telephone anywhere in the world. This format offered listeners a chance to hear from people in the news and/or reporters covering a particular story.


Cross-Country Check-Up

A weekly phone-in program on issues affecting Canadians. Debuted Sunday October 24, 1965. Hosts: [60s], Brad Crandall, Percy Saltzman, Betty Shapiro; [70s] John Dafoe, Pierre Pascau, Harry Elton, Elizabeth Gray, Wayne Grigsby; [80s] Dennis Trudeau, Augusta LaPaix and Peter Downie; [90s] Rex Murphy[1994-ongoing].


CBC Winnipeg Orchestra

A weekly series of concerts by the city's symphony orchestra. Aired on the FM network from 1966 to 1973.

A weekly program of contemporary classical, electronic and avant garde music by Canadian, American and European composers. Aired from c1965 to 1978.

Symphony Hall

A weekly classical music concert by leading Canadian orchestras and ensembles.
Debuted in 1962 on the Trans Canada network.

Aired Sunday mornings 10am to Noon. Hosts: Ken Haslam; Catherine Duncan.



A nightly program, eclectic in form and content, covering social issues, culture and the arts, geopolitics, history, biography, science and technology, and the humanities. Debuted in 1965.

The premiere broadcast of IDEAS (at first called The Best Ideas You'll Hear Tonight) was on the CBC-FM network, amalgamating two former series titled University of the Air and The Learning Stage.

Hosts: Lister Sinclair; Paul Kennedy. Aired from 9 to 10 pm., Monday to Friday. Radio One.


CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra

A weekly series of concerts by the city's chamber orchestra. Aired on the AM and FM networks from October 1965 to c1976.
