On November 27, the CRTC approved the application by Wawatay Native Communications Society for a broadcasting licence to operate a low-power Type B Native FM radio programming undertaking1 in Timmins. The applicant indicated that, in each broadcast week, the new station would broadcast an average of 126 hours of programming, including 55 hours of programming in the Cree language. The applicant would also air an additional 55 hours of network programming from OjiCree Radio Sioux Lookout during each broadcast week in the OjiCree language. The remaining 16 hours would be broadcast in the English language and would be produced locally. The new station would offer a pop, rock and dance music format along with native and local music. It would also broadcast music fests showcasing native culture. Programming would also include interviews, native current events, issues, political updates and changes, traditional stories, legends and beliefs. The applicant submitted that by speaking in the native language, native youth would be encouraged to maintain their language and culture. The station would operate at 106.7 MHz (channel 294LP) with an effective radiated power of 50 watts and the licence would expire 31 August 2013.
CJWT-FM signed on the air before the end of the year.
