1975

Mohawk College launched carrier current CHMR. The station was also available off campus via Mountain Cable.

 

1997

On June 6, approval was granted to The Mohawk College Radio Corp. for an FM station in Hamilton. The new station would operate on a frequency of 101.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 160 watts. The station would be a non-profit campus / instructional station, and broadcast from the Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology. It would be the city's second station of this kind, with McMaster University already operating CFMU-FM.

 

1998

CIOI 101.5 “C101” began broadcasting on March 23, at 6:00 a.m. Studios and offices were located at the Fennell Avenue campus. Power was only 40 watts at the start. Full power of 160 watts was implemented once the permanent transmitter was set up on the Cogeco Cable tower near the campus. C101 had a staff of about 70 volunteers and broadcast a variety of music with an emphasis on new Canadian music.

 

2003

On August 6 the CRTC renewed CIOI-FM's licence until August 31, 2010. It is a condition of licence that the licensee retain full control over all decisions concerning the management and programming of this station and that representatives of the student body, faculty, alumni or administration representatives of the university or college with which the station is associated, considered together, form the majority of the board of directors. In addition, the Commission reminds the licensee that the chief executive officer and not less than 80 per cent of the members of the board of directors must be Canadians ordinarily resident in Canada.

 

2009

In October CIOI changed its name from C101.5 to INDI 101.

 

2011

On August 31, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence for CIOI-FM to December 31, 2011.

 

2012

On August 28, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence of CIOI-FM to December 31, 2012. On December 21, the licence was renewed to August 31, 2018.

 

2014

In January, Indi 101.5 rebranded to The Hawk 101.5 "Hamilton's Alternative".

 

2019

On August 30, Les Palango retired after 43 years in radio. Palango’s career has included stops at CKJD Sarnia, CJJD Hamilton, CJCL Toronto and CHML/CJXY Hamilton. For the past 18 years, Les had been manager of Mohawk College campus station 101.5 The HAWK Hamilton.
