As of September 1st 2019 we will only be adding new material to these station histories in exceptional circumstances. Our intent to chronicle the early days of these radio and television stations has been achieved, and many new sources and technologies, from the CRTC website to Wikipedia, are now regularly providing new information in these areas.
CHPO-FM, Country 93.1, Portage La Prairie
Golden West Broadcasting Ltd.
CFRY switched its FM transmitter to a brand new radio station when Country 93.1 (CHPO-FM) signed on the air September 24. Formerly known as CFRY-FM, the transmitter had simulcast CFRY 920. It was now offering separate programming to complement the traditional Country format of CFRY-AM.
The transmitter was originally licenced by the CRTC on September 7, 1995, to operate with 27,000 watts at 93.1 MHz. Approval of that application marked the first occasion that the Commission had authorized a private broadcaster to construct a transmitter within the coverage area served by its existing station for purposes other than correcting technical deficiencies in the signal coverage of the existing station.
CFRY-AM and FM (now CHPO-FM) were sold by Portage-Delta Broadcasting Company Ltd. to Golden West Broadcasting Ltd. in 2000.
